“Vegetables are important in life. This lesson plus other important lessons provided by Priestmead have changed my whole life and family.”
Francois Hitimana
Beneficiary and Vegetables Farmer
Land Development goes hand in hand with nutrition. Once a family has the strength to maintain their own land, that’s a significant step towards self-sufficiency - and knowing what to grow and how to grow it is the beginning. This is taught during the first phase of Land Development - each family helps in the construction of their own Kitchen Garden - providing a significant proportion of the families vegetables.
-
In the rural parts of Rwanda, every square inch of a families land can and should be developed to produce something. Once a family has mastered maintaining their own kitchen garden, most are ambitious enough to start developing other areas of their land (some very creatively in the limited space they have). With the help of Claude and the Land Development Team, the Priestmead families standout within their villages with the highest quality and output from their land.
-
The Land Development Team, led by Claude, has a number of site managers, co-ordinating small teams across the areas in which Priestmead operates - each team member is a beneficiary and the jobs are offered on a credits system with Priestmead. Some families have used the Priestmead Credit System to expand their land, growing vegetables which they sell back to Priestmead. These vegetables are then distributed within the fortnightly nutrition packages.
