Nutrition

Around 40% of children in the Northern Province of Rwanda suffer from malnourishment and stunting - a severe impairment of growth and development. A consistent and balanced diet is a substantial factor in making sure families don’t live with these life threatening conditions.

The Priestmead Nutrition Division is responsible for helping families to overcome their malnourishment, teaching the practicalities of cooking a balanced diet and the reasons why it is so important.

“I can have breakfast, lunch and supper all enough, balanced and healthy. Before it was not even a dream, but with Priestmead it is no longer a dream but a reality and my cute children are very happy!”

Beneficiary and Vegetables Farmer

Without food, we have no strength, energy, concentration or motivation. Long-term malnourishment will make the simplest of tasks seem overwhelming. That’s why Priestmead has such a focus on nutrition. The Program provides a balanced diet for every member of the family, enough for 3 meals a day. Fortnightly, a family will collect their food, individualised based on the number of adults and children.

The fortnightly food package consists of of rice, potatoes, beans, fish, vegetables, flour, sorghum, milk, eggs - but it must be prepared and cooked properly to be served as a healthy, nutritious meal. Charlotte, along with other Nutrition Team members teach families how to correctly and hygienically cook a balanced meal. As part of the program, Priestmead also supplies all families with the essential materials for cooking at home - pots, plates, mugs, utensils and soap.
