Household Development

Pride, discipline, tidiness and even cleanliness are not considered a priority when living in extreme poverty. But once the most severe problems like malnutrition begin to be overcome, these qualities are contributing factors to progressing out of poverty. Having pride in your household raises the standard for other areas of life.

The Priestmead Program teaches a family to have discipline and pride within their household. With support from other Divisions a family’s home becomes a place of comfort and happiness - absolutely necessary for self-sufficiency.

“As a site manager, I am happy because before, I was not able to do anything, but now I am helping more than 50 families to do something! Proud to be in the Team of Priestmead.”

Therese Mvuyekure
Beneficiary and Site Manager in Household Management Division.

Household Development starts with the reasons why - a tidy home is a tidy mind. Through a series of lessons and demonstrations families are taught how and why to take pride in their homes and themselves. This discipline helps to create order in a family’s life - no longer feeling embarrassed or ashamed of what they have or who they are.

Priestmead also encourages families to formalise their marriages. Many couples are unofficially married, but formalising it proves a commitment and provides stability within a home. This commitment and discipline creates a momentum, that makes new opportunities easier to see and a confidence to take them.
